Nasceu em Bocai\u00fava<\/strong>, no Norte de Minas, e mudou-se para Belo Horizonte aos 20 anos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9 advogado<\/strong>, formado pela UFMG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foi vereador de Belo Horizonte<\/strong> entre 1989 e 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Em 1992, foi eleito prefeito de Belo Horizonte<\/strong>, governando de 1993 a 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foi deputado federal por Minas Gerais<\/strong> em diferentes legislaturas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No primeiro governo Lula, assumiu o Minist\u00e9rio do Desenvolvimento Social e Combate \u00e0 Fome<\/strong>, participando da implanta\u00e7\u00e3o e consolida\u00e7\u00e3o do Bolsa Fam\u00edlia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
